The cool, green Chiriqui Highlands of western
Panama offer some of Central America's most rewarding mountain hiking. Here,
Panama's tallest peak, the dormant 11,400 foot tall Baru Volcano, dominates
the cloud forest draped Cordillera Talamanca. The La Amistad International
Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Volcan Baru National Park
protect some of the largest tracts of virgin forest in Panama, home to
innumerable plant and animal species, some of them endemic. Follow paths to
vantage points from where, weather permitting, you can enjoy "two ocean"
views. The trails of the region also offer one of the best opportunities in
Central America to spot resplendent quetzal, without a doubt, the loveliest
of Central America's avifauna.
