5 An August dusting of snow on the Garden Wall from the trail to Grinnell Glacier.

NEW TRIP!
August 16-21, 2009

Plan your arrival in Kalispell for the morning of August 16, 2009 at the latest
Plan your departure from Kalispell for August 22, 2009

Glacier National Park has been given many monikers describing its superlative mountain scenery. "Crown of the Continent" and "America's Switzerland" are just two, and both are apt descriptors. The sculpted forms of Glacier's mountains recall the classic landscape of the Alps and the park's excellent trail system puts the park's magnificent high country scenery within reach. Rambling, wooden national park lodges dating from the days when the Great Northern Railroad played a key role in promoting Glacier as a premier mountain recreation area enhance your stay in one of America's treasured wonderlands.

Day 1
Arrival day. Overnight at Lake McDonald
Dinner included
Transfer from the Glacier Park Airport (or Whitefish, Montana) to Lake McDonald Lodge in Glacier National Park. Enjoy a "warm up" hike this afternoon to Avalanche Lake, a classic glacial lake set in a massive cirque whose walls are laced with waterfalls!

Day 2
Overnight at Lake McDonald
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

From Logan Pass, set off on your first hike in the Glacier high country! Hike across the renowned flower meadows of Logan Pass and descend to the shores of Hidden Lake beneath the looming bulk of Bearhat Mountain. Or, for a longer day on the trail, hike the spectacular Highline Trail to Granite Park before descending to "the Loop" on the Going-to-the-Sun Highway." Both hikes are above timberline for their duration, so you'll enjoy non-stop views all day long!

Day 3
Overnight at Many Glacier
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

From Siyeh Bend on the Going-to-the-Sun Highway, ascend the trail to the meadows of Preston Park at the foot of magnificent ten-thousand-foot peak of Mount Siyeh. A longer hiking option continues over windswept Piegan Pass and descends along the course of the Cataract stream past lovely Morning Eagle Falls to Lake Josephine and further to Many Glacier where you'll settle in for a two-night stay.

Day 4
Overnight at Many Glacier
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Hike to turquoise-colored, iceberg-speckled Iceberg Lake, one of Glacier Park's most memorable sights. You can extend your trail outing with a side-trip to the Ptarmigan Tunnel, a trail tunnel which pierces the top of the arête wall above Ptarmigan Lake. From the northern portal of the tunnel, enjoy a beautiful view over Elizabeth Lake and the Belly River country!

Day 5
Overnight at East Glacier
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Hike along the shores of Swiftcurrent and Josephine Lakes and continue on to reach the shores of lovely Grinnell Lake nestled at the base of imposing cirque walls. A more challenging hiking option ascends to the Grinnell Glacier perched on a shelf below the ramparts of the Garden Wall. From this trail, enjoy beautiful vistas over Grinnell, Joesphine and Swiftcurrent Lakes. In the afternoon, travel by vehicle to East Glacier where you'll spend the next two evenings.

Day 6
Overnight at East Glacier
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

A short transfer by vehicle brings you to the Two Medicine area. Enjoy a hike is this less-frequented, but no less magnificent, part of Glacier Park. Hike to the Twin Falls and on to scenic Upper Two Medicine Lake backdropped by Lone Walker Mountain. Energetic hikers can tackle the trail to Dawson Pass from where a magnificent view extends over the remote Upper Nyack Creek drainage. The elegant, pyramidal form  of Flinsch Peak dominates the view. The trail traverses the upper slopes of the Nyack Creek valley, continuing to Cut Bank Pass and Pitamakan Pass before descending the Dry Fork stream to the starting point at Two Medicine Lake. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening. Your breakfast and transfer from East Glacier back to Whitefish or Glacier Park Airport on the following day is included in the trip price.
